February 2023 SRITC Virtual Cafe: BYOC
February Virtual Cafe will be dedicated to the Dingle Peninsula, located in the south-west of Ireland, which has been designated as the decarbonisation zone for Co Kerry. Transport (at 54% of the total) is the greatest single user of energy on the Peninsula and a national Sustainable Mobility Pathfinder project is underway to develop reliable, realistic, easy-to-access and affordable alternative modes of travel that will reduce high levels of private car dependency currently inherent in rural areas.
Recognising that standalone measures will not be sufficient to enable decisions to car shed, the project is working to unlock solutions through the integration of measures including effective, sustained and meaningful community-engagement, enablement of modal shift, enhanced sustainable public transport and infrastructure, and analysis and evaluation of effectiveness of measures for rural areas.
March 2023 SRITC Virtual Cafe: BYOC
Register now to secure your FREE ticket to attend SRITC's March 2023 Virtual Cafe: BYOC. This month we will be joined by Charles Musselwhite, Professor of Psychology, holding a Chair in the Psychology Department at Aberystwyth University. He is going to talk about the health side of transport issues people face in rural areas.
You can expect to hear the answers to the following questions by the end of the Cafe:
• We all know that mobility can be extra challenging in rural areas but how do such challenges effect people’s physical and mental health?
• How do we maximise the health benefits of living in a rural area when mobility can be so restrictive?
• How does this play out among different groups of people living in rural areas and does it widen health inequalities?
• And finally, can rural areas be resourceful and use their sense of community and social capital to maintain health?
June 2023 SRITC Virtual Cafe: BYOC
June Virtual Cafe will outline a research case study by the James Hutton Institute in Argyll and the islands, which is exploring the role of transport in relation to rural and island repopulation. We will outline the project and would love to hear about transport-related issues or initiatives in the area and their impact on the everyday lives of residents.
